about

LUST AFTER DEATH is an important piece of God Astray history that has remained locked away in the vaults for 6 years....until now.

Although a handful of songs existed as far back as 2004 (demos for Ashes of You, Dark Grey, Heartless, As Black As Hate...), God Astray wasn't officially formed until February 2008 when GA mastermind Joe Lupia moved into a new place, set up a studio, and immediately got to work on this new project. On the very first day in this new studio the song "Penetrate" was written, and the project was titled God Astray. Over the course of the following year and a half, GA continued to demo dozens of songs, and slowly an album began to take shape. Spanning many genres, the songs were stylistically all over the place, so eventually Joe streamlined the direction of the project and fashioned a collection of songs that fused heavy, groove-oriented rock guitars with electronics & synthesizers and heavy beats.... and lyrically focused on the various aspects of failed relationships with ex-girlfriends and ex-band mates.

This collection of songs was finally assembled in fall 2009, and titled Lust After Death....but other than a few burnt CD-Rs that were handed out to a few friends, the recording was never actually released in any form. Between fall 2009 and May 2010, Joe wrote/completed a handful of new songs (Heartless, The Ghost Machine, As Black As Hate, Unrecognized, Life as a Ghost), and entered Subcat Studios in Skaneateles, NY to mix these new tracks with reworked versions of the Lust After Death material....resulting in the Ghosts In Captivity album released in May 2011.

Lust After Death is the perfect example of a young project beginning to realize its potential. Although it lacked much of the high end production seen on Ghosts In Captivity, LAD was still a pretty solid recording for a home studio, especially given that some of the studio gear was rather primitive and lacked many of the audio software plug-ins that are used these days.

In addition to the entire Lust After Death demo, we've included a few unreleased bonus tracks from the early days. "Reflecting" is a cool, mostly instrumental piece that was originally written in 2006, but updated and re-recorded in 2008. "Penetrate [Princess of Lust Mix] is a self-remix (my first remix ever, in fact!) that was never released for whatever reason. Also included is the VERY FIRST EVER official God Astray track, "Penetrate"....and this is the original demo recorded that first day in the new studio in February 2008. It's terribly rough, but it's an important part of GA's history, so here it is!
